Pierce County approves supplemental power line franchise for OHAW Mutual Light Company, 7‑0

The Pierce County Council voted 7‑0 on Feb. 25 to adopt Ordinance O2025‑500, authorizing the executive to execute a supplemental franchise agreement with OHAW Mutual Light Company to locate power lines in additional county rights‑of‑way.
Planning and Public Works staff briefed the council. Mr. Swanson said the supplement would expand the company’s franchise area beyond the current map in the existing 15‑year power‑line franchise approved in February 2022. He noted the county engineer reviewed the application and recommended granting the supplemental franchise and that a fiscal and equity analysis were included in the council packet. The applicant paid a $2,500 application fee.
Mr. Onisky of Planning and Public Works told the council the proposal was “pretty straightforward” and staff were available for questions. No members of the public spoke at the ordinance’s public hearing.
Council member Krueger commented that he is served by OHAW and said, “they just rock,” expressing support for the utility’s service in the county. The clerk called the roll and recorded seven ayes and no nays; the ordinance was adopted and the executive was authorized to execute the supplemental franchise agreement.
