Saint Charles Fire Department honored after quick response and CPR saved resident

Chief Mavi told the Saint Charles City Council on March 3 that a coordinated response by firefighters, ambulance crews and bystanders saved a resident’s life after a cardiac arrest on Oct. 28.
Chief Mavi introduced Tom, Lynn and Emily North and described the response: the first fire unit arrived about three minutes after dispatch, performed an assessment, began advanced medical care including defibrillation, and the ambulance crew provided additional advanced life‑support interventions before transporting the patient to hospital. “Within 3 minutes from when the call was placed, the crew arrived in a fire engine, performed a quick assessment and initiated advanced medical care, which included cardiac defibrillation,” Chief Mavi said.
Tom, the patient, addressed the council and said he had no recollection of the event. “I have no recollection of anything that happened. When they talk about me being in pain, never felt a thing,” he said, adding later, “I’m 71 now. And, again, no issue, heart issues. I never felt a thing.” Chief Mavi also thanked the two moving‑company employees who performed initial CPR at the scene and praised the fire and ambulance crews for their training and quick action.
Tom told the council he later underwent triple bypass surgery and that he is doing well. Council members publicly thanked the crews and the bystanders who performed CPR; Chief Mavi described the response as the result of years of training and teamwork.
No formal council vote was associated with the recognition; the remarks were part of council presentations and the meeting proceeded to other business.
