The McHenry City Council on March 3 passed an ordinance granting a sign variance to Chick‑fil‑A for a proposed outlet at 1911 North Richmond Road, allowing two additional wall signs not to exceed a combined 150 square feet and a freestanding sign up to 15 feet tall and 80 square feet in area.
City staff said the request closely follows the restaurant’s corporate sign prototype and noted similar variances have been granted in other locations. Staff recommended approval and no residents spoke in opposition during the meeting.
Alderman Glab supported the variance, saying the request aligns with corporate branding and the city’s sign standards have previously accommodated similar requests. The council voted unanimously to approve the ordinance.
The developer and U‑Haul representatives have worked with city staff on site layout and the new outlet is expected to move forward now that the sign variance and prior site work are supported by council action.
