Parks department reorganizes leadership, readies programming and software rollout

Parks Operations Manager Tanya Burnett told council that the parks department has restructured leadership in the absence of a parks director and will operate with a five-person leadership team for at least six months.
Burnett said Christian Hansen moved from superintendent of the golf course to superintendent of parks and will oversee grounds and athletic fields; Whitney Birdz Velasquez is the athletic director and is leading a new registration and management software rollout; Brett Ricketts moved from part-time senior event coordinator to community development director and will oversee events and senior programming; Roger Gallatin remains Sunrise Golf Pro; and Burnett is the operations lead. She described the arrangement as a temporary staffing plan to be reevaluated in about six months.
Burnett said the department will use the new software beginning April 1 to simplify public registration and reporting; QR-code scanning and other features will speed processing at Crystal Beach. She noted the pool will open Memorial Day weekend with Whitney managing lifeguarding and certification and another staff member returning as day-to-day general manager.
She said the parks office relocated to Brown Gym and that an administrative retirement will occur in May; Bridal Lee will start part time in April to train with the outgoing secretary. Seasonal maintenance hires and a job fair at Crystal Beach on April 5 were announced. Campground hosts Lehi and Natalie Hook will return this year. Burnett also said staff are preparing athletic fields and new dugouts at John Paul Park.
On finances, Mindy and the mayor reported that four separate funds were established during budget season to track money in/money out for Sunrise Golf, Crystal Beach, the campground, and Rutgers; that change is intended to clarify revenues and expenses for each facility. Burnett said Sunrise trended closer to breakeven last year and that fee increases and expense control contributed to the improvement. She asked council to consider expanded outreach (yard signs, radio and other methods) to boost registration for youth leagues.
No ordinances or budget transfers were voted at the meeting; staff said they will present more detailed budget reports at future meetings.
