El Segundo City Council on March 4 approved a request to waive Municipal Code section 10‑1‑4(c) to permit alcohol service at Library Park for the Gundo Comedy & Barbecue Festival, scheduled for June 8, 2025.
Applicant (festival organizer) described the event as a combined comedy and barbecue festival that will use Library Park on June 8 as the outdoor component of a multi‑day festival running June 5‑8. The organizer said the festival had run prior to the pandemic, returned last year and sold out many events; he said this year’s edition intends to expand and “bring in bigger names to experience El Segundo.” He said he teamed with local event organizer John McCullough to broaden the event.
Director Michael Allen confirmed proper notice of the hearing and told the council staff had received nine pieces of written communication as of 3 p.m. on the hearing day; the communications were filed with the city and not read aloud. Council Member Baldino moved approval and Council Member Giroux seconded; the motion passed by unanimous voice vote.
The council did not state conditions tied to the waiver in the meeting record other than the standard requirement that event permits and operations comply with city rules and that appropriate notices and insurance be on file prior to the event.
