Purdue Extension highlights 4-H, health and agriculture programs; announces April 30 banquet at fairgrounds

Jacob said the office is working with after-school programs on heart-health and nutrition activities, teaching financial literacy through the "Captain Cash" program in elementary schools, and increasing 4-H enrollment with STEM activities for third-graders. "We've also been in several of the elementary schools, doing Captain Cash programs, talking about financial literacy," Jacob said. She added the Extension is "continuing to grow our 4-H enrollment" and provides livestock care training that covers biosecurity and animal science.
Tabby Flynn, ag and natural resources educator, told the commissioners about the master gardener program and the giving garden at the Vigo County Fairgrounds. "That garden annually produces over 10,000 pounds of food," Flynn said; the transcript indicates that produce is donated to local food pantries, soup kitchens and surrounding counties, and that volunteers and county homemakers help process produce in partnership with Indiana State University (ISU). Jacob said the office will host a Purdue Extension annual banquet "on Wednesday, April 30 in the evening, down at the banquet center at the fairgrounds," with program participants and volunteers presenting highlights.
Gail Wright, health and human sciences educator, described health programs including FoodRx and Dining with Diabetes classes that teach cooking and nutrition, as well as Matter of Balance fall-prevention sessions and fraud-and-scam education for older adults.
The Extension staff asked commissioners if they had questions; one commissioner asked for participant totals, and Jacob said she would provide rounded numbers to the office. The transcript records no formal county action on the presentation.
