Supervisors hear updates on courthouse roof, water-quality complaints and regional agreements

County staff provided brief updates to the Muscatine County Board of Supervisors on several ongoing matters during the March 3 meeting.
Community Development Director Eric Furnace told the board that stone slate has been placed on the courthouse roof and contractors expect to complete upper-level slate work and dismantle top-level scaffolding weather permitting, likely in May. He said finishing the cap connection between the slate and copper roofing tiles on the clock tower would allow crews to progress on the rotunda and remove upper scaffolding.
Supervisors discussed water-quality complaints reported by residents. Board members said the concerns originated in December and that the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services and the state’s Inspection, Appeals and Licensing unit are involved. Local public health staff are “in the background” because the matter involves a licensed health-care facility; county staff reported the appropriate state agencies are leading the response.
The board also discussed a safety study connected to proposed solar-powered stop signs; staff said they are awaiting the safety study results before deciding whether to install additional units. Separately, the board acknowledged receipt of an open-records request related to opioid-settlement documents from an outside requester (named in the record as Emily Leeder) and noted that county attorneys and staff will respond and locate relevant meeting minutes and authorizations.
Finally, the board chair said he had signed a mandatory shared-liability agreement for the Mississippi Valley Workforce Development partnership, a routine annual action required of participating counties.
