Parks maintenance report: splash pad repairs, new fitness court, tree-planting schedule announced

At the March 4 meeting of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission, Steve Glimp, Manager of Parks and Grounds Maintenance, summarized recent park repairs and upcoming volunteer events across Las Vegas wards.
Glimp said crews refurbished a splash pad at Rainbow Family Park, repaired concrete and replaced pump fittings, and added a fitness court station at Angel Park. "We just refurbished a flash, splash pad at Rainbow Family Park. Repaired some of the concrete and repainted it and and, actually replaced some of the pump fittings," he said. He also described security and access repairs: "Ward 3, we installed a new wrought iron fence on the south perimeter of Baker Park. It was a chain link fence and it was getting cut almost weekly for the illegal access into the park, so we had to remedy that."
Other work included horseshoe-pit rehabilitation at Wayne Bunker (Ward 4), resurfacing of courts in Ward 5, and the installation of a Gaga ball pit at Gilcrease Brothers Park. Glimp said staff received positive feedback on the Gaga pit from park users.
Glimp outlined volunteer tree-planting events organized with Get Outdoors Nevada: a recent planting at Stewart Place Park where "about 30 volunteers... got about 15 trees in the ground," and upcoming events scheduled March 8 (Mirabelli Community Center), April 5 (Centennial Hills Park), April 22 (Firefighters Memorial Park) — each from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. — and Arbor Day on April 26 at Children's Memorial Park.
Commissioner Russell Martin asked about safety surfacing at a renovated playground at Kellogg's Aire. Glimp said the fall zones will be finished with appropriate safety surfacing and that once the playground is complete "there won't be any safety hazards." On disposal of removed playground equipment, Glimp said some past equipment was donated when feasible but "for the most part... they get trashed" because they are beyond repair.
Glimp said the parks trades team and the urban forester will return with seasonal updates later this year. No formal action was taken on maintenance items during the meeting.
