Commissioners approve boat-ramp contract, accept $20.6 million beach-restoration grant, adopt cremation ordinance amendment and finalize Old Pelican Bay MSBU

The board awarded a $1,623,586 contract to Ajax Paving for phase 1 site work at the Ponderosa boat ramp, accepting a construction-management presentation that said the package covers underground utilities and paving. Commissioner Greenwell moved approval; Commissioner Moloka seconded. The motion carried with no objection.
The board also accepted an amendment to a Florida Department of Environmental Protection disaster grant that adds $19,503,700.22, bringing the total grant amount to $20,607,832.22 for beach nourishment work on Lovers Key and Bonita Beach. Steve Boutel of county staff described the amendment as reimbursement for beach repairs after Hurricane Ian and other storm damage; commissioners approved the amendment with a motion and no objection.
In other business, the board adopted an amendment to the county's medical examiner cremation ordinance after the county attorney verified publication was legally sufficient and the item received no public comment. The board approved the ordinance amendment by motion and no objection.
Finally, the board approved the final assessment roll for the Old Pelican Bay maintenance special assessment (MSBU). Staff said the total project cost was $731,306, and that state and FEMA funding reduced property-owner costs by $294,525.50; after prior collections, staff reported a remaining balance of $4,536.09 per unit. Commissioners moved and seconded approval; the motion carried with no objection.
