Members of the Sunnyside Community & Economic Development Commission spent the meeting assigning commission volunteers as leads on the commission’s priority goals and discussing several program ideas and facility opportunities.
Commission volunteers: Commissioners worked through a goal list and assigned at least one lead for each priority area so members and residents know whom to contact for particular issues. Commissioners emphasized that assignment of a lead does not exclude others from participating; leads will act as a primary contact and coordinator for each goal area.
Prosser site and nonprofit office space: Commissioners reported outreach to nonprofit partners and to the church next to the Prosser site that has unused rooms. Commissioners described that a regional church representative had expressed interest in programming space for nonprofits and youth activities, and that the church could offer rooms at a reduced cost if the city or partners help with routine maintenance (for example, lawn care and HVAC filter changes). The commission said the church building is large and within walking distance of the community center and local schools, making it a practical short-term option while a longer-term fundraising campaign is developed for a dedicated facility.
Farmers market plans: A proposed farmers market vendor group is exploring Sunday dates to avoid competing with nearby markets on Fridays and Saturdays. Commissioners discussed logistics including setup and takedown windows (early morning through midafternoon), potential gravel parking-lot sites and the possibility of closing a street section if parking proves limited. Commissioners also discussed marketing and vendor recruitment as necessary to ensure customer traffic and vendor retention.
Community gardens and youth programs: The commission said community members have expressed interest in starting multiple community garden sites and that the community center and other city property are potential locations. Commissioners also discussed youth programming and partnerships with organized leagues; a regional soccer organization (CERV) had approached the city to use fields and provide league infrastructure. Commissioners noted that recent budget cuts reduced Parks & Rec staffing and that the city is reassigning duties: Mitch Ziegler from Public Works will take expanded responsibilities for pool operations and lifeguard coordination while the city recruits to fill vacant positions.
Why it matters: Commissioners framed these items as operational, near-term priorities that will shape how the city uses existing buildings and public space to deliver programs without large new capital outlays. Several commissioners emphasized the need for targeted sponsorship, donor cultivation and clear volunteer leads to carry projects forward.
Next steps: Commissioners agreed to investigate specific sites, follow up with the church and nonprofit partners about office- or program-space arrangements, develop a marketing and vendor recruitment plan for the proposed market, and report progress at the commission’s next meeting.
Evidence from the meeting: The commission discussed the church’s offer of space and possible interlocal-style tradeoffs (city maintenance in exchange for space use). The commission also noted the need for a fundraising or donor campaign if the group pursues a larger, dedicated facility in the future.
Ending: Commissioners closed the meeting with assignment confirmations, agreed next steps and scheduling for a follow-up working session to advance the projects discussed.
