The Hendersonville traffic engineer evaluated a citizen request and recommended removing the stop control on Settlers Way at McCain Crossing because the volume warrants for an all-way stop were not met, the committee was told Feb. 25.
Staff described the intersection as within a subdivision in Ward 5; Settlers Way is the major street while McCain Crossing currently has stop control. Traffic counts showed substantially lower volumes than warrants for a multi-way stop—typical warrants cited were about 300 vehicles per hour on the major approach and 200 per hour on the minor approach for an 8-hour period. Staff reported counts in the area showed only about 30 vehicles per day on one approach, below the thresholds. The traffic department committee unanimously voted to proceed with the recommendation.
Public acceptance of removing a stop can be negative, staff warned. Before any change is implemented, staff said they will coordinate with the Ward 5 alderman and the subdivision’s homeowners association and execute a communication plan that may include sign boards and notices. Committee members confirmed the change is administrative and does not require a separate committee vote; staff expects to notify residents before any implementation.
