New York Senate adopts resolution marking Kosovo’s 17th Independence Day

The New York State Senate adopted Resolution 259 on Jan. 28 commemorating the 17th anniversary of Kosovo’s declaration of independence.
The resolution, sponsored by Senator Scarcella Spanton, recognizes Kosovo’s declaration of independence in February 2008 and honors the contributions and sacrifices of Kosovars. The measure passed as a commemorative resolution and was opened for cosponsorship on the floor.
Senator Scarcella Spanton, the resolution’s sponsor, welcomed constituents and guests and described the day as “a significant moment in recognizing Kosovo’s remarkable journey to independence,” noting perseverance and sacrifices made en route to statehood. Spanton also thanked her Staten Island director, Vanessa Lamani, for helping to organize the Senate’s observance.
Senator Fernandez spoke in support, saying it is important “to give the grace, the dignity to a community that exists, that is here, and that is continually contributing to our great state,” and identified the Kosovar community as a valued part of New York’s population.
The Senate extended the privileges and courtesies of the chamber to the guests who attended the observance. The resolution was recorded as adopted on Jan. 28 and remained open for cosponsorship following the floor recognition.
The observance included remarks honoring Kosovo’s history and those who died in the conflicts leading to independence; the resolution recognizes Feb. 2008 as the date of Kosovo’s declaration of independence.
