An entomologist with Martin County Mosquito Control described the mosquitoes common in Martin County and urged residents to remove standing water to limit the risk of mosquito-borne disease.
The entomologist, who said they have worked at Martin County Mosquito Control for two years, explained that mosquitoes can reproduce rapidly after rain or tidal flooding and described the typical life cycle. "So it's very, very fast, and these insects usually have a quick life cycle. So we're talking 1 to 2 days for the eggs to hatch, and then somewhere between 7 to 10 days for them to go through their entire larvae development, 2 to 3 days with pupa, and then they're fully adult," the entomologist said.
The presentation identified Culex nigropalpus as the most common species in Martin County and noted it breeds in stagnant water such as ditches and small pools. The entomologist said Culex species can transmit encephalitis, naming West Nile, St. Louis encephalitis and eastern equine encephalitis as diseases associated with those mosquitoes. "They will breed almost anywhere, so they're really prevalent, and they do transmit encephalitis," the entomologist said.
The speaker described both floodwater and container-breeding species, including saltwater species that rely on tidal flow to hatch eggs and Aedes species that breed in containers found around homes. The entomologist said females can lay between 10 and 100 eggs per clutch, and that some Culex lay egg rafts that can contain 100 to 200 larvae.
To reduce mosquito populations at home, the entomologist recommended removing or emptying containers that hold water at least weekly. "So you can tip and toss things like flower pots, buckets, tires, anything that will hold standing water. You wanna make sure that it's emptied at least weekly," the entomologist said.
The presentation emphasized that big weather events such as hurricanes and heavy rain can quickly create new breeding habitat by flooding areas or filling containers. The entomologist noted that the speed of the mosquito life cycle—about two weeks from egg to adult under favorable conditions—makes prompt removal of standing water important for control.
