School committee approves Lewiston High JROTC trip to Maine Maritime Academy; instructor announces retirement

The Lewiston Public Schools School Committee on March 3 unanimously approved a field trip request for the Lewiston High School Air Force JROTC to attend the Maine Maritime Academy Cadet Leadership Challenge.
Lieutenant Colonel Mark Welborn, the Lewiston High School Air Force JROTC instructor, told the committee the weekend leadership event runs from about 5 p.m. on Friday until roughly 10:30 a.m. on Sunday and is “packed with a lot of leadership activities.” He said the group had sought the same opportunity last year but the academy canceled because of low participation at that weekend.
Welborn also clarified that a listed Blackhawk helicopter would be a static display for cadets to view and climb on; “there’s no flying” as part of the planned activity, he said. He told the committee he expected between 15 and 20 cadets to attend but said final numbers will depend on returned permission slips.
Member Janet Bowden moved to approve the field trip; Member Hurd seconded. Member Bowden called the vote and the committee approved the trip unanimously.
After the vote, Welborn announced he will retire at the end of the school year. He told the committee he has been teaching JROTC for about 15 years and said a new NCO has already been hired to fill the NCO position next school year.
The trip packet originally included reference to a water survival event; Welborn said there will be no water event at this particular leadership weekend, though there will be other supervised activities run by cadets and academy staff. The committee record shows the trip was approved; the district will finalize participant lists and chaperone plans after permission slips are returned.
