Trader Joe’s adds assistant manager to alcohol license, wins extended sale hours

The Board of License Commissioners unanimously approved two related changes for Trader Joe’s at 659 Worcester Road: the addition of Michael Brown as assistant manager on the malt and wine retail license, and an extension of the license hours to 10 p.m. (the store continues to close its doors to new customers at 9 p.m.).
David Kelly, identified in the hearing as store captain, said the extension would allow staff a short buffer to finish lawful alcohol sales to customers already inside without rushing them out at closing. “We close our doors at 9, but we’d like a little wiggle room so we can legally sell alcohol to customers who are already in the store,” Kelly said; legal counsel had proposed the extension to 10 p.m.
Commissioners asked about the assistant manager paperwork and training for alcohol sales. Michael Brown told the board he has roughly 20 years’ experience with Trader Joe’s and related alcohol‑sales training. Lieutenant McCarthy expressed no objection. The motion, conditional on municipal approvals and payment of fees, passed 5–0 on roll call.
