Framingham appointment subcommittee approves slate of board and committee nominees

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. — The Framingham Appointment Subcommittee voted Feb. 18 to advance a group of applicants to the City Council for confirmation, approving nominees for the Bikes & Pedestrians and Trails Committee, the Agriculture Committee and the Loring Advisory Committee.

The subcommittee approved Denise (Precinct 26, District 2) for the Bikes & Pedestrians and Trails Committee; John Van Alston (District 3) for the same committee; John Randell (Precinct 12, District 7) for the Agriculture Committee; and Lee Gagan, Peter Pradella, William “Billy” Wynot and Don Tricheta for the Loring Advisory Committee. Each of those confirmations passed the subcommittee by recorded voice votes of three in favor, zero opposed. Minutes from March 25 were approved 2–1, with one member recorded as voting no. The meeting adjourned by unanimous vote.

Why it matters: these appointments populate advisory bodies that advise the city on active-transportation planning, urban agriculture programming and operations at Loring Arena, a long-used recreation facility in Framingham. Filling vacancies lets the committees begin or continue work on trail maintenance and expansion, community gardens and rink operations, and moves nominees to the next formal step — a City Council confirmation vote.

Denise, who listed a residency in Framingham since 1985 and experience using and advocating for the city’s trails, told the subcommittee she hopes to “participate in the committee to maintain the…trail, improve the trail, [and] promote the trail.” John Van Alston described himself as “an avid biker and trail walker” and urged exploring connections across Framingham that would link southern neighbors such as Holliston with northern areas such as Sudbury through existing corridors. John Randell, identified as a molecular biologist who works at the Broad Institute and part-owns a family farm in Iowa, said he hoped to help city residents who want to garden but “don’t know where to look for information.”

On the Loring Advisory Committee, Lee Gagan said she was “deeply invested in making sure we continue to support and improve the experience for our kids and families.” Peter Pradella, a new Framingham resident with volunteer experience maintaining state-park trails, and William Wynot, who described two decades of experience teaching skating and coaching, each spoke briefly about bringing a user’s perspective to rink programming. Don Tricheta, a longtime youth-hockey volunteer, said the arena “is a gem to the town of Framingham and has been for 60 plus years” and said he would work to ensure a smooth transition as rink operations change.

The subcommittee also noted Forrest Harrington’s prior approval at an earlier meeting; Harrington was mentioned as part of the bikes-and-trails group but was not re-voted on during this session. The committee recognized Bill McCarthy as a mayoral appointee who does not require the subcommittee’s vote.
