The Lakewood City Board of Education voted to appoint Dr. Stephanie Morgan as the district’s next director of student services, the board announced during its March 3 meeting.
Board member Mrs. Shaughnessy moved adoption of the resolution to hire Dr. Morgan; a second was recorded and the board approved the motion by roll call. Mr. Zimmerman called the roll; the transcript records affirmative responses from the roll call: “Ms. Gazzaburger. Aye. Ms. Shaughnessy. Aye. Ms. Clark Sutton. ‘Hi.’ Mister Callahan. ‘Hi.’ Miss Dodman. ‘Hi.’” The motion carried and the district introduced Dr. Morgan to the meeting.
Superintendent Niedzwiecki (spelled in the meeting transcript) summarized Dr. Morgan’s background: 17 years in student services roles, recent experience at Brunswick City School District directing services for students with disabilities, English learners and students experiencing homelessness; prior roles in Westlake City Schools, Barberton and Brecksville‑Broadview Heights. The superintendent also noted Dr. Morgan’s experience managing federal grants and budgets and her academic credentials (undergraduate degree from John Carroll University, a master’s from Kent State University and a professional doctorate from Youngstown State University).
Dr. Stephanie Morgan addressed the board: “I’m very excited to join. … I look forward to trying your lettuce and coming to watch you dive. And hopefully, maybe even getting to see you run. So thank you for all you do to support the students. I’m excited to be here to support the students, families, and staff of Lakewood City Schools.”
Why it matters: the director of student services oversees special education and related services and is responsible for compliance with federal and state requirements, grant management and district supports for students with disabilities and other needs.
The board and district staff welcomed Dr. Morgan; she will begin in the role next school year.
