NDOT outlines 2025 work and traffic transitions for 20 Third Street reconstruction

The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) provided an update to the Columbus City Council on March 3 about the ongoing 20 Third Street reconstruction project.
NDOT representative Mr. Bogus told the council the project will move into the south-side phase next week, contingent on weather. The city and NDOT will leave as many signalized intersections open as possible — including 20 Third Avenue, 20 Sixth Avenue and Thirtieth Avenue — and will use temporary paving when needed to maintain access.
"They're originally going to start today. But because of the pending weather in the next couple days, they've decided to wait till next Monday," Mr. Bogus said. He said the initial transition to the south side will take about a week and will be followed by pavement removals, utility work and major construction targeted for substantial completion by September, with additional work such as permanent striping and signal work continuing afterward.
Council members asked whether Eighteenth Avenue would remain open; Mr. Bogus confirmed north-south traffic on Eighteenth Avenue will remain open, though some turn-lane closures may occur. He characterized the 2025 phase as similar to the prior year's work but on the opposite side of the corridor.
The update outlined the sequence of lane transitions and noted the schedule is weather-dependent. No formal council action was required during the update.
