Capital improvements committee forwards mower, maintenance and land purchase appropriations to full council

The Newark City Council capital improvements committee on March 3 voted to forward three appropriations to the full council: a single mower for Parks/Cemetery operations, $33,000 for building maintenance at a city-owned facility, and $30,000 to purchase the last privately held parcel in the Don Edwards Complex. Each appropriation was approved by committee 5-0.
Director Rhodes presented the items. On the cemetery request, Rhodes said the department’s need is for four mowers overall but the committee was being asked to approve one mower now; Rhodes said additional requests may follow as budget conditions allow. For building-maintenance work, staff requested $33,000 to address climate-control work in the Carlton Tower building — described in committee as work to improve climate control on basement, first and second floors. The committee approved forwarding that appropriation to the full council.
The committee also approved a $30,000 appropriation to buy the final privately owned house parcel inside the Don Edwards Complex. Rhodes said the city has pursued the property for years, the current owner has expressed willingness to sell, and the city will evaluate possible community uses for the house or consider demolition and site consolidation if no municipal use is identified.
All three items were sent to the full council for final action.
