The Community High School District 99 Board of Education on Monday recognized multiple student teams and individual athletes for state-level finishes and coaching awards.
The board and district staff honored the combined Downers Grove South and Downers Grove North gymnastics team (the Trostangs) for winning the state championship. Coach Campos and assistant coaches Kylie Bosco and Bill Norris joined seven student members on the dais; students named in the presentation included Edie Condon, Ally Polanski, Aylin Landry, Emily Cook, Dominique Herrion, Caroline Phillips and Lauren D.C. Aylin Landry was noted as a state bars finalist who placed fifth and Dominique Herrion was identified as the balance beam champion and an all‑around medalist. Principal remarks said the team went undefeated in dual meets and invitationals and achieved the largest winning margin at state in more than 25 years.
Dr. Peeley read proclamations from the Village of Downers Grove and the Village of Woodridge honoring the gymnasts and naming specific days in the athletes’ honor; the board invited the team and coaches for photographs with the board.
The board also recognized Downers Grove South’s speech team, which the principal and coach said finished as state runner‑up. Individual speech finishers and champions were named, including Sebastian Blanco (state champion in radio speaking) and Carly Blue (state champion in dramatic duet acting). Coach Justin Makovich noted several individual placings and congratulated seniors who spoke at the dais.
Individual athletic recognitions followed: girls tennis coach Josh Forst was named Illinois High School Tennis Coaches Association Region 2A Coach of the Year and player Gabby David was recognized as an all‑state tennis player with nearly 100 career wins. Cheer coach Shannon Leahy introduced two All‑State cheer athletes, Ivy and Jada. Boys soccer coach Chris Hernandez praised Daniel (Danny), who was named among the top five All‑State players in the section and was recognized for career scoring totals (29 goals, 16 assists) and a 14‑goal, 13‑assist season. Girls volleyball coach Madison Babich introduced two IVCA All‑State players, Alex and Sylvia, and said the program reached the top‑8 in state competition this season.
Board members and district staff praised the students’ leadership and the extracurricular programs; the board invited parents and students for photos and public acknowledgement. Presenters repeatedly noted the teams’ hours of practice, leadership roles and community support.
The recognition segment concluded with group photos and applause before the meeting moved on to other agenda items.
