Council sets March hearing on ordinance to ban unregistered vehicles on public roadways, approves local traffic changes

The Lansing City Council on Feb. 24 introduced an ordinance to add Section 404.15 to the city code to prohibit the parking of unregistered vehicles on public roadways and set a public hearing on the measure for March 10.
Council President Kost read the ordinance by title and referred it to the Committee on Public Safety; Vice President Carter then moved to schedule the public hearing for March 10, and the motion passed unanimously.
Separately, the council approved three traffic control orders that adjust parking regulations on local streets after neighborhood petitions. Traffic Control Order 2456 will allow unrestricted parking on the north side of West Thomas Street from Turner Street to the west dead end following a petition signed by 16 of 20 properties. Traffic Control Order 2461 modifies parking on Eaton Road to allow unrestricted parking on the east side and prohibit parking on the west side after petitions showed support for the change. Traffic Control Order 2463 changes parking patterns on Weyburn Road to prohibit parking on the north and east sides and allow parking on the south and west sides after survey responses favored that option.
Councilmember Brown presented the traffic items and noted resident petitions met departmental standards in each case. The ordinance introduction and the traffic orders passed by unanimous vote.
The public hearing on the unregistered-vehicle ordinance is scheduled for 7 p.m. March 10 in City Council Chambers.
