The Kentwood City Commission voted Feb. 18 to approve a resolution authorizing a contract with the Michigan Department of Transportation for reconstruction of segments of 50 Second Street.
City staff said reconstruction covers 50 Second Street from Division Avenue to Eastern Avenue and from Breezefield Drive to Broadmoor Avenue. The total estimated construction cost is $2,760,000; MDOT’s maximum federal share is listed at $2,050,000, leaving an estimated local share of $708,000. Because the grant does not cover contingency, staff added a 10% contingency to the estimate, yielding a Kentwood share estimate of $985,000. City staff said the city share will be paid from the FY25–26 major street fund, funded by Act 51 gas-tax dollars. MDOT planned to take bids in early March.
Commissioners asked about timing and traffic impacts; staff described a paving approach intended to limit lane closures (mill-and-overlay practice) and compared traffic-control approaches to prior projects such as East Paris. The commission approved the resolution on a roll-call vote with all members voting yes.
