The Lynn Senior Center will begin a new support group for grandparents who are raising grandchildren because of the opioid crisis, Director Megan Best told the council.
“We're starting a new grandparents support group in conjunction with Greater Lynn Senior Services, Community Connections, and the Lynn Senior Center,” Best said. The group will meet twice a month and will include a monthly outing that grandchildren can attend, she added.
Membership is for grandparents age 60 or older who are raising grandchildren because of the opioid crisis, Best said. Participants may have varied legal arrangements — some have legal custody through probate court, others are working with the Department of Children and Families, and some may not have formal custody — and the group is intended to support all these circumstances.
Best said staff will create a resource and relaxation room at the center where grandparents can research community supports, access a computer, and take a break. The center plans to post a flyer and share information through its mailing list once details are finalized.
Board members asked for contact and flyer details so they can refer potential participants. Best said people interested should contact the Lynn Senior Center for more information.
