Lynn senior center finishes phase 1 of renovation; staff reopen kitchen space and add new programs

The Lynn Senior Center has finished phase one of a building renovation and is reopening program and kitchen spaces, Director Megan Best told the Lynn Council on Aging board.
The work completed includes returning the kitchen to service and reclaiming a smaller multipurpose room that staff previously called the “knitting room,” Best said. “We are finished with phase 1 of the construction here at the senior center. We are going to … start utilizing our kitchen again,” she said.
The center is already using newly finished space at the end of the building for activities, Best said. Current programming there includes chair yoga and a new “bingo‑size” program developed with the UMass School of Nutrition that combines bingo-style play with exercise and nutrition education. Staff also said they are assembling a low‑vision lab at the opposite end of the building.
Best acknowledged a long-running Wi‑Fi problem that predates her tenure. After work with the city IT department and a local IT consultant, staff located the issue: an access point in the administrative area “is not active” and another access point was removed during construction. Best said the removed access point was recovered and staff are working with IT to restore service; she expected the fix “relatively soon.”
Board members and center staff said the additional program space will let the center expand offerings and reduce crowding. Best said staff are moving the steam table and refrigerator back into their intended locations to make the dining and activity areas more usable.
The board discussed timing of future meetings at the center and asked staff to confirm whether the available conference spaces, tables and chairs will be ready before resuming in‑person board meetings.
