The City of Sweetwater Commission approved a three-year lease to acquire Harley-Davidson motorcycles for the police department and authorized funding for the lease.
Deputy Chief Noel Gill of the Sweetwater Police Department explained the contract will reduce the department’s fleet by one motorcycle for the remainder of the fiscal year, producing a monthly savings of approximately $240 during that period. “For this contract period for the rest of this fiscal year, we are actually subtracting 1 motorcycle, so there will be a monthly savings of approximately $240,” Gill said. He said the new lease includes upgraded rear storage boxes with an extra battery and cradles for computers and printers, which he said should reduce equipment failures and recurring replacement costs.
Why it matters: The upgrades aim to improve officers’ field equipment reliability by providing space and power for computers and printers, which previously were stored in ways that led to frequent replacements. Gill said the new rear boxes should reduce the frequency of changing out devices.
Commission discussion touched on vendor selection. Commissioner Marti asked whether other manufacturers, such as BMW, were considered. Gill said the department explored other options but could not secure a small contract with BMW at this time and said he would provide further details later.
The commission recorded a roll-call vote approving the lease. Commissioners recorded as voting “yes” included Commissioner Villanueva; Commissioner Yano; Commissioner Ruiz; Commissioner Martin; Commission President Ray; Commissioner Diaz; Commissioner Reyes; and Commissioner Guadalupe.
