The Town of Miami Lakes Veterans Committee voted on March 1 to require all existing and future veterans banners to be reapproved every two years and asked town staff to develop a Veterans of Miami Lakes submenu on the municipal website where banner images and information would be archived.
The reapplication motion passed after discussion about limited physical space for banners and how to manage banners for residents who move away. Committee members said a two-year reapplication cycle would let the committee remove banners when the honorees are no longer town residents while preserving a public record online. "So let's do a motion on requiring that there be a reapplication on everybody for a banner who has a banner. We apply every 2 years," a committee member stated during the discussion; the motion was seconded and approved.
The committee also voted to ask the town to create a Veterans of Miami Lakes submenu on the town website so that photos of banners—both current and retired—can be stored and searched online. The motion to request information from town staff on how much the submenu would cost and what it would require was seconded and approved.
To handle reviews before Memorial Day, the committee created a small vetting subcommittee (members named during the meeting: the chair, Mister Borman, Dave Small and Pedro) and scheduled a special meeting for March 13 at 6 p.m. to vet new banner applicants so approved banners could be installed before Memorial Day. Committee members said new banner applications will be circulated in a packet to speed vetting.
A committee member also raised concerns about QR-code placement and misuse on other public signs and suggested using short URLs as an alternative or backup. The committee discussed the Girl Scouts’ plan to pin photos and short biographies for banner honorees on a map or website and noted that the town liaison would coordinate technical details with staff.
The committee voted on the reapplication rule, the website submenu request and the subcommittee creation during the meeting; all three motions passed. The committee asked staff to provide cost estimates and design options for the web submenu and to circulate banner applications to subcommittee members ahead of the March 13 meeting.
