Public commenters urge immediate housing and procedure changes after two children died; callers press council for stronger follow-up

Several callers referenced the two children’s deaths and urged system-level changes. One caller said the city should not let families “be judged by funerals” and recommended documented procedures and follow-up so families who ask for help are not lost in the system. Another speaker said an unsheltered woman and her children had been denied shelter and urged a city resolution to prevent shelters from refusing families with children.
Commenters asked for direct help locating housing, for counseling and for follow-through rather than temporary responses. Council members and staff told several callers they would follow up through council offices; the chair offered a council phone number for assistance.
The public comment segment also included unrelated service announcements (the Board of Ethics’ community training event in partnership with the Detroit Pistons) and other calls on transit and water issues that were raised separately during the session.
No committee action was taken during public comment; callers asked the council to use upcoming budget and policy processes to prioritize housing, outreach, and clearer emergency procedures for vulnerable residents.
