Council delays Park Synagogue zoning vote to allow additional public notice

Cleveland Heights City Council Committee of the Whole moved the zoning map amendment for Park Synagogue to a later meeting, giving the public additional time to respond.

Councilman Cobb said he would "ask that we refrain voting on this until our next meeting" and asked staff to increase public outreach; Cobb said he supported the measure but was concerned about the timing and notice provided to residents. That request led the council president to schedule the ordinance for a third reading and a vote on March 17.

The item is an amendment to the zoning map identified in the agenda as 245-2024. Council members discussed whether to request additional presentations from staff or simply allow more time for public comment; the majority favored delaying the vote to ensure the community had notice and opportunity to respond. No vote on the substantive zoning change occurred at this meeting.

Council members emphasized procedure and public notice rather than whether they supported the substance of the change. "I just wanna make sure we're all on board with waiting till March 17 to vote on this," one council member said during the discussion.

The council president confirmed the item will return for third reading on March 17. Staff were asked to include the zoning change in the next city email blast and newsletter to notify residents, and to prepare any additional materials requested by council prior to that meeting.
