MERRILL, Wis. ' The Merrill Area School District Board voted Feb. 19 to end its contract with the Lincoln County Health Department that covered nursing services for 4K-12 and to move forward with hiring one full-time district nurse and two health aides at 0.625 full-time equivalent each.
Ron Liberty moved the motion; Amber Aluska seconded. Superintendent Shannon Murray and board members discussed staffing and implementation details; Murray said the plan is intended to be "a bit of a change" but stressed the district is optimistic about the potential, particularly the expanded health aide capacity.
Board members asked what would happen if the district cannot fill both 0.625 FTE health aides immediately; Murray said the district could start the school year with one health aide and adjust staffing as hires are made. Administrators told trustees the change is budget-neutral relative to the current contract arrangement.
The motion passed on a voice vote.
District staff will proceed with hiring and return to the board with any implementation details as positions are filled.
