DeKalb County Animal Services reports surge in dog intake; Healthy Pets event scheduled March 15

Chamblee ' A DeKalb County Animal Services representative told the Chamblee City Council that the county shelter is experiencing a sharp rise in dog intake and encouraged Chamblee residents to adopt or foster animals and to attend a Healthy Pets event on March 15.
"Currently, we're at 534 dogs. Intake has been going up very quickly lately. The past week, we took in 134 dogs. And for reference, the previous year we brought in 91 dogs in that same week. So about a 40% increase since then," the representative said during the council's presentations segment.
The presenter said one of the council's invited animals this evening was Wanda from DeKalb County Animal Services and noted the shelter's new "pet neighborhood" facility has begun construction. The representative also promoted a county Healthy Pets event scheduled for March 15 at Assembly Atlanta, offering microchipping, vaccines and spay/neuter services for DeKalb County residents.
Council members thanked the animal-services staff for bringing Wanda and encouraged residents to consider adoption or fostering. The presenter also directed residents to the shelter website given in the presentation for more details about services and events.
The council added the Lifeline Animal Showcase to the meeting agenda earlier; the presentation itself was part of the meeting's scheduled presentations and did not require council action.
