The Okanogan County sheriff's office said work on a new morgue and evidence-storage building is paused while contractors and engineers finalize foundation design and wait for more favorable ground conditions.
Mike Gordon of the sheriff's office dispatch center told commissioners that cold temperatures have forced the contractor to pause footing excavation and that thermal blankets are in place to protect footing areas. Gordon said a recent geotechnical update prompted a revised foundation approach; early analysis suggested a more expensive foundation type, and a follow-up ground-scanning review gave engineers confidence they can move to a less costly foundation design.
Gordon said the contractor will finalize foundation plans and then proceed with footings once weather allows. He also reported that a Connex (storage container) was added to the site and a nearby pad was cleared to support ongoing staging.
No new cost figure or revised schedule was presented at the Feb. 11 meeting.
