Okanogan County commissioners ran a test of an AI meeting notetaker during the Feb. 11 session and said they will not allow unrestricted use of the tool until the full board can review policy and cost implications.
Commissioners and staff said the tool was trialed so the county could compare an automated transcript and recording with the existing audiovisual record. A staff member said the county permitted a trial at a previous meeting but will not "allow it this time" and intends to discuss broader policy when the full board is present.
A public commenter noted that recording public meetings is legal but emphasized that speakers generally must be notified when a meeting is being recorded. The county said it will examine subscription costs, whether multiple notetaker accounts are needed, and how any recordings would be stored and made available.
The county did not adopt a formal rule at the Feb. 11 meeting; officials said they will bring a proposal to a future full-board meeting for further consideration.
