Clallam County seeks Washington State Archives grant to digitize 30 boxes of aerial photos

Clallam County staff told commissioners on Feb. 18 they will apply to Washington State Archives for a grant to scan roughly 30 boxes of historical aerial photographs the county stores in the old courthouse basement.
Staff described the photos as indexed by township, range and section and said scanning would make them far more accessible to staff and the public. "Scanning these images will make them a lot more accessible, to staff and to the public," Jesse, a county records staff member, said. He added that Washington State Archives would pick up the records, perform scanning and reindex the files, and return scanned copies while the county retains original prints.
The grant is competitive; reviewers consider factors including long-term retention needs, public accessibility after scanning and request frequency. If the county receives the grant, staff said the archives contractor would perform scanning and indexing and GIS staff would work to add the images as an online map layer when time allows.
Commissioners indicated approval to proceed with the application; staff said they will act on the item in the larger work session so the application meets an early-March deadline.
