A Senate committee voted to give House Bill 193 a due pass after proponents said the change would let the Legislative Education Study Committee take a cradle-to-career approach by adding early childhood and higher education to its remit.
Representative (sponsor) introduced the bill, saying the expansion would help provide a unified view of education from early childhood through college. Meredith Machen, representing the League of Women Voters and allied groups, praised the bipartisan work of the LESC and urged support. Naomi Valdez, registered lobbyist for NEA New Mexico, said the change would engage educators and those affected by policy.
No organized opposition appeared at the hearing. A member moved to pass the bill and the chair announced the bill had a due pass after recorded committee support; the clerk recorded eight members voting in favor.
