Kittitas County Public Works told commissioners it is monitoring roads for seasonal weight restrictions and highlighted Umtanim Road as a location of concern because of heavy-haul traffic.
Josh Gregerson, Public Works staff, said variable spring weather — freeze-thaw cycles followed by rain — has softened some road sections. The department evaluates a handful of roads annually for temporary weight restrictions and posts limits to protect pavement during vulnerable periods.
"Our concern, obviously, from a public works standpoint is damage and cost to the road to make those repairs, due to their legal loads going through," Gregerson said, describing discussions with a contractor hauling through the area. He said the county is considering a weight restriction to reduce road impact or negotiating with the contractor on alternative haul methods and potential repairs to allow the project to continue.
Gregerson emphasized these are seasonal measures, not permanent restrictions, and that staff review weight limits each year as frost leaves the ground and conditions change. No formal action was taken; staff will monitor conditions and work with the contractor as needed.
