Kitsap officials report openings, small-scale projects and a pending site announcement for homeless services

Kitsap Regional Coordinating Council members on Feb. 4 received a series of housing and homeless-services updates: the Pacific Building shelter in Port Orchard has opened and begun moving people in; the Nordic Cottages project is under construction in another jurisdiction and is on schedule; and a Kitsap Sun story reported that an additional site announcement for shelter or housing is "imminent."

Commissioner Oren Root reported the Pacific Building homeless shelter in Port Orchard "has opened and started moving people in," noting the timing came as cold weather struck the county. Mayor Becky Erickson described the Nordic Cottages project as visible in the ground and on budget. "It's only eight units but it's a pathway forward for being able to build affordable housing with really a very modest revenue flow," she said.

Councilmember Jeff Coughlin, who has attended coordination meetings, noted there is no firm public timeline for the imminent site announcement but said community partners have made substantial progress and deserve credit for sustained effort.

Peninsula Community Health Services was credited at the meeting for developing medical-respite and transitional housing options tied to acute-care discharges; meeting remarks described roughly 30 total beds across medical-respite and two transitional projects in downtown Bremerton (one complete, one in development). The Salvation Army was also noted as maintaining a low-barrier walk-up shelter until alternatives are fully in place.

Board members praised partners and emphasized the incremental, multi-agency nature of the progress. No formal policy action or funding decision was taken at the KRCC meeting.
