The House Naming & Designating Committee discussed and advanced STR/SJR 17, a resolution honoring former President Jimmy Carter. Chairman (Representative) Bullsoe said he removed the item from the consent calendar to expand the resolution and add accomplishments from Carter’s record, including his post-presidential work and remarks at the dedication of the Carter Presidential Center.
Representative Jones asked whether the Senate sponsor, Senator Akbari, had reviewed and agreed to the changes; Chairman Bullsoe said he had exchanged multiple times with Senator Akbari and incorporated many of her comments but not all. Jones identified specific language he believed had been removed from earlier drafts, including references to Carter’s leadership addressing the climate crisis and outreach to people impacted by the AIDS crisis and the LGBTQ community. Chairman Bullsoe responded that a climate-specific wording in the earlier record was historically inaccurate and that the resolution still includes language on ending discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.
The committee accepted the working amendment (code 4283) and, after a voice vote, moved the amended resolution forward. The clerk recorded nine ayes and one present not voting. Chairman Bullsoe said the resolution will return to the House floor after committee action.
