Senate committee interviews Nancy Merrill for reappointment to Idaho Personnel Commission

The Senate Commerce Committee received testimony from Nancy Merrill, the governor's nominee for reappointment to the Idaho Personnel Commission. Merrill, an Eagle resident and former mayor and state parks director, described prior service and said she looks forward to returning to the commission.
Merrill told the committee she has served the city of Eagle for 20 years, including five years as mayor, and previously served as Idaho State Parks director during a period when her department faced severe budget cuts. "I was able to... secure through the help of our JFAC committee, a $3,000,000 bridge going into Eagle Island State Park," Merrill said. She said the personnel commission handled a small number of weighty appeals during her previous tenure and described the role as requiring careful listening and study.
Committee members thanked Merrill for her public service. Senator Lake, who spoke during questioning, asked how mayoral experience informed her service on a personnel commission; Merrill said that experience helped her with hiring, firing and dispute resolution and taught her to "calmly listen and ask questions." The committee did not vote on the reappointment during this hearing; the chair indicated appointments are generally voted at the next meeting (Thursday).
