Committee approves bill to require advanced math pathways and automatic enrollment for qualified students

A committee substitute for Senate Bill 171 (LC610170S) passed the Senate Education Committee after sponsor remarks, public testimony and a brief amendment. The measure would require local schools to establish an advanced academic math pathway for grades 6–8 and implement automatic enrollment for qualified students; it would authorize advanced offerings in grades 3–5.

The sponsor argued the measure was intended to open "a gateway of new and exciting opportunities" by ensuring that aptitude, not local counselor or teacher decisions, determines access to advanced math. Michael O'Sullivan, executive director of Georgia CAN, supported the bill and said evidence about differentiation is stronger in middle school; he described automatic enrollment as a means of ensuring equitable access. Supporters, including principals and advocates, said the change would give students earlier exposure to algebra and other advanced coursework that can lead to calculus in high school.

During committee discussion representatives raised implementation and staffing questions. Senator Kemp proposed an amendment to add language encouraging or requiring districts to support teachers who instruct advanced math with training or support (for example, adding language to connect supports to teachers instructing the advanced mathematics pathway). Sponsors accepted the amendment as friendly; the committee then voted to adopt the substitute with the change.

The committee passed the substitute for SB 171; the transcript records a motion and a second and a voice/hand vote in favor. The bill will proceed to the next legislative steps.
