Students from Nicholls State ask Terrebonne Council to support March coastal summit and share materials

Representatives from Nicholls State University’s mass communications program asked the Terrebonne Parish Council on Feb. 26 to support and promote a student-led event called the Louisiana’s Restoration Generation Coastal Summit.
"The summit will be held on March 12 from 9 to 3 in the Cotillion Ballroom at Nicholls State University," said Ann Morgan Simmons, one of the student representatives, who said the event will include panel discussions, vendor presentations, live Cajun music and a discounted lunch for attendees. Simmons said the campaign is sponsored by Restore the Mississippi River Delta and aims to educate and inspire high school and college students and the surrounding community about coastal land loss.
The request came during the meeting’s public-comment period. Council members responded with immediate outreach offers: members asked whether the parish could post the students’ flyer on official parish social media and website channels and encouraged the students to return to a council meeting for follow-up discussion. Council members also noted that Mark Black, the parish coastal zone manager, had been briefed and planned to attend the event.
"We do have all of our, like, social media and stuff like that. It's Louisiana's restoration generation... we will give y'all permission to share whatever y'all want," Simmons said, offering a web link and QR code on flyers the students provided to the council.
Why it matters Terrebonne Parish faces ongoing coastal land loss; local promotion of public education events can help increase community awareness and participation in restoration efforts. The council did not take formal action tonight but encouraged staff and council members to coordinate with the students, and scheduled an invitation for the group to return to a future meeting for discussion.
Ending The summit is scheduled for March 12, 2025. Students left flyers and QR codes with the council; council staff indicated they would explore posting those materials on parish social channels and that parish coastal staff would attend the summit.
