Chief Carroll reported on vehicle projects and squad response data at the Feb. 27 meeting.
Carroll said the Salem chassis was taken to Lee Transport for body installation and will return for outfitting with lights; the vehicle is expected to be at the outfitter for about six weeks. The Oakway truck remains on order and is not expected until about June. Staff said Salem requested additional out-of-pocket equipment (a bed cover) for their vehicle. The Oakway and other squads’ vehicle status updates were discussed during the report.
On response statistics, the chief reviewed monthly dispatch figures for squads. The transcript notes that one squad recorded 95 runs with one recorded 'no response' for the month; other squads’ figures were summarized qualitatively (Oakway and Wohala reported roughly 50 runs each, Wohala’s effective-run percentage referenced at about 60 percent). The commission discussed efforts to revive squads that are restarting operations and to support new members joining squads.
Regional updates included: Region 1 contact with Oakway Rescue reporting two members recently passed EMR; Region 2 reported a rescue class with four members certified and upcoming fundraising events (an April car show and a May 3 breakfast); Region 4 reported 16 new members completing class and community engagement events (meet-and-greet and open-house table); Rescue 7 (dive) reported two new members, upcoming swim/dive skill tests and sonar and dive training events in March and April. Rescue 8 reported maintenance on trail bikes, receipt of Duke Energy grant equipment and motions to purchase an AC unit for a Swiftwater trailer plus new helmets and full-body harnesses.
Why it matters: Vehicle availability, certified personnel and equipment readiness affect rescue-squad capacity to respond to emergencies across the county.
No procurement votes were recorded for vehicle purchases during the open meeting portion. Several squads said they are recruiting and training new members to improve response rates.
