Coop presents early master-plan findings; 2,700 survey responses shape priorities

Coop Architecture presented an update Feb. 4 on the Rapid City Area Schools master plan, reporting early themes from community input sessions and an online survey that produced more than 2,700 responses.
Jared Sarta of Coop said the team conducted building visits, workshops with principals and PTA, and four community input sessions scheduled across the district. He said early feedback emphasized safety and security, aging infrastructure and maintenance backlog, classroom sizes and teacher retention, inclusive accessibility, technology and recreation/wellness facilities. Coop described an exercise it uses to help stakeholders prioritize investments under limited budgets and said those priorities will inform a draft master plan the firm expects to share with the board in early March.
Why it matters: The master plan will guide district capital priorities and potential bond proposals. Representatives said the plan will look at a multi-year horizon (roughly five to 10 years) and propose phased strategies for modernization, maintenance and future capacity needs.
Coop encouraged additional public participation and said it will present a draft for board review in March; the firm noted community sessions are open to all district residents, not only parents at the host school. Board members thanked Coop and the administration for outreach and asked for the draft plan to be available in advance of a board discussion and public presentation.
