Register of Deeds staff told the commission they are exploring alternatives to Tyler Technologies’ land‑records software after service interruptions, payment processing problems and loss of functionality; a procurement package may come to the commission in the near term.
Chief Deputy Register of Deeds Harry Kalajarakis told the Wayne County Commission the Register’s office has begun exploring other vendors to provide land‑records and document‑scanning services after problems with the county’s current vendor, Tyler Technologies.
Kalajarakis — speaking for Register of Deeds Bernard Youngblood — said issues include high turnover among Tyler’s programmers, software updates that removed desired functionality, problems processing credit‑card payments after a new payment module was deployed, and a lengthy service outage following an October cyber incident that kept the office offline for about a week. Youngblood directed staff to open discussions with procurement to evaluate alternatives, Kalajarakis said.
Procurement director Arthur Walker has advised the office on how to conduct vendor searches; the Register’s office has spoken with multiple companies and expects to present a package to the commission when a path forward is identified. Kalajarakis cautioned a change of system is complex and time‑consuming: previous transitions took considerable effort and data migration work.
Kalajarakis also reported ongoing requests to improve the county’s property‑alert/fraud card system by adding address as a search criterion; he said staff have repeatedly asked for that capability to improve accuracy for residents receiving property alerts.
Commissioners thanked the Register’s office for the update and said they would watch for any forthcoming procurement package.
