Committee approves VOCA subgrant to fund victims’ rights week outreach

Tony Guerrero, chief of legislation, grants and community relations for the Wayne County Prosecutor, presented the item and described it as an annual federal award that supports public-awareness programming. He told the committee the award term is Jan. 15, 2025, to June 30, 2025, and that the subgrant carries no local match requirement. "What you have before you is an annual federal grant that supports the prosecutor's office victim services division's public awareness campaign during the national crime victims rights week," Guerrero said.
Guerrero listed events tied to the week: a survivors-and-victims walk at Belle Isle on Sunday in April, an awareness and prevention event at Henry Ford College on Tuesday in April, and victim speakers and community award presentations at the Criminal Justice Center on a Friday in April 2025. Commissioner Patricia Garza moved the item; Commissioner Wilson seconded the motion. With no recorded questions or opposition, the chair called the vote and the motion carried.
The subgrant was described as a recurring annual award in the packet; the presentation did not identify the dollar amount in the committee record, nor any matching requirement beyond the presenter saying none was required.
