Resident questions use of contingency funds and commissioner reporting during Barry County public comment

Gary White, addressing the Barry County Board of Commissioners during the limited public-comment period Feb. 11, urged the board to clarify an agenda item that he said relied on contingency funding and asked whether commissioners’ reports capture community conversations.

"I found it interesting that there's no funding required because just contingency. We're just gonna take out a contingency fund," White said. He asked whether any department could draw from the contingency simply because the contingency exists and requested clarity on the purpose and use of the contingency referenced in agenda item 12.

White also asked whether commissioner reports (agenda item 18) are used to bring information back from communities. He specifically referenced discussions in Cass Township involving Commissioner Mike Colton about a certificate-of-appropriateness issue and a jail feasibility study.
