The Albany Utility Board approved a $104,850 annual contract with Verizon Connect to provide telematics services for the city’s fleet.
Staff said the system will allow the city to monitor, locate and map assets; capture diagnostics and trouble codes; and produce exception reports (for example, speeding and aggressive driving) that department directors can use for coaching or discipline. Fleet staff emphasized the program is intended to drive safer driving behavior and reduce liability and repair costs.
Presenters described the service mix: GPS-only units for nonpowered assets (‘‘the BRICK’’), full telematics for vehicles with onboard computers, and customized reporting so departments receive exception-based alerts rather than constant notifications. Fleet staff said department directors are responsible for day-to-day monitoring and that the system will be incorporated into employee performance evaluations as part of citywide accountability efforts.
The motion to authorize staff to enter the Verizon Connect contract carried unanimously; roll-call votes recorded Mister Burley — yes; Miss Collier — yes; Miss Fields — yes; Mister Woodall — yes; Chair votes yes. Staff told the board the program will be paid from the utility fund under a state contract and that the system is expected to support accident investigations and reduce false claims.
