Mayor delivered the city’s annual report at the Feb. 3 council meeting, listing economic-development milestones from 2024 and projects expected to advance in 2025.
The mayor told council that last year Shelby saw business reopenings and expansions, new medical offices, public-art dedications and the return of community festivals. Looking ahead to 2025, the mayor highlighted several projects the city is tracking: the arrival of components for a 10-megawatt battery energy storage system adjacent to the city’s solar field; a regional developer planning a modular housing community with capacity for 48 affordable homes; a Shelby CAC-led redevelopment pre-planning process for the Shaw Building funded by a Vibrant Communities pre-planning grant; and an East Main Street subdivision that will build five duplexes.
The mayor also thanked staff and department heads by name for work on public safety, utilities, parks and economic development. He announced the city’s first Bee Festival, planned for May 31, and noted investments by private partners including a planned expansion by a large retailer on Mansfield Avenue, growth at Lloyd Rebar on Technology Parkway and a Shum Foundation initiative focused on the Upper West Square.
The mayor framed those items as early-stage developments in some cases and asked council to continue coordinating with city staff and partner organizations as designs and funding are finalized.
