Alderman Bernetta B. Lanier pulled the item for discussion and said neighborhood groups in Cloverdale and Carver Village had requested updates about the project and the associated grant spending. Lanier and other councilors said the Springfield Canal design work is intended to address recurring flooding and that residents had asked for clarity on timelines and funding. The city manager advised council that staff are following up with federal partners because some federal grants — including FEMA‑reviewed awards — could be under additional scrutiny, and that staff will not proceed on certain tasks until they have clarity from those partners.
Council approved the contract by voice vote after Alderman Perdue moved for approval. Staff said the design work will continue the city’s downstream improvements on Springfield Canal and will inform later construction phases intended to reduce flood risk in affected neighborhoods.
