Finance director: unfiled income tax letters sent; leak under railroad tracks could cost $150,000–$200,000

The Finance Director informed Fostoria City Council that the city’s tax authority mailed letters to residents who have not filed Fostoria income tax returns for tax years 2018 through 2022. The director said retirees with no earned income are not required to file but must notify the tax authority or the city to be removed from active filers.
"If somebody retires, they're no longer required to file, income tax returns with the city as long as they do not have any earned income. However, they need to let Bridal or the city know," the Finance Director said.
The Finance Director also told council staff are assessing a leak in a water line beneath the railroad tracks. "She's telling me it's realistically gonna be between 150 and $200,000 which is about 2 thirds of our repair and maintenance budget for the year," the director said. The director said the leak is not a "huge" one but large enough to have been noted by the railroad and that the city is working to determine repair costs.
At the Finance Committee earlier in the evening, the committee reported that 2024 is closed and that the city's share for the ODOT resurfacing project is $9,933,000; committee members said reports should be populated later in the week.
Councilmembers were advised to expect public questions about the tax letters and the water leak; staff said they will provide additional information and outreach as needed.
