Paga told the meeting she first became interested after competing in the American Legion Oratorical contest. “It actually started when I went to the American Legion Oratorical. In my sophomore year, I went to the nationals contest,” she said, and that research led her family to discover the U.S. Senate Youth Program.
The program includes travel to the nation’s capital and meetings with national leaders; Paga said participants will receive the full itinerary only a week before the trip for security reasons. “They actually cannot release the itinerary to us until a week before for security purposes, so I don't even know what I'm gonna do yet,” she said.
Paga said she hopes to meet her state senators and to learn from national leaders about leadership and public service. “I'm truly honored and very excited to get to represent Kennedy and the entire state of Iowa as I go to Washington Week,” she said.
The student’s remarks were a brief public announcement during the meeting; no formal action or vote accompanied the statement.
